WASHINGTON — Win Without War Executive Director Stephen Miles released the following statement regarding impeachment:

“The House’s impeachment inquiry has confirmed much of what we already suspected: Donald Trump perverted U.S. foreign policy for his own personal gain. And his entire national security team was in on it. By using U.S. military aid, official government acts, and political access as bargaining chips to pressure a foreign government into investigating his political rivals, Trump dangerously subordinated the interests and security of everyday individuals, in the U.S., Ukraine, and around the world, to his own political whims. It has never been more clear that impeaching and removing Trump from office is not only a democratic, but also progressive foreign policy imperative.

“But Trump’s offense, however egregious, did not emerge from thin air. It is emblematic of a larger antidemocratic trend in U.S. foreign policy that far precedes him. Whether backing famine and massacres in Yemen for the profit of U.S. weapons manufacturers, shaping Middle East policy at the behest of foreign interests, or putting U.S. soldiers in harm’s way to steal other countries’ resources — U.S. foreign policy has long privileged the wealth and power of a few over the democratic demands of the many.

“Foreign policy should be determined by and for the people. By using the massive power of the U.S. government and its tools of statecraft to attempt to bribe foreign actors into interfering in the 2020 election, Trump has taken the imperial presidency to its extreme conclusion. It’s up to Congress to end this dangerous abuse of power and reassert democratic control over national security policymaking. We support the ongoing inquiry, and call on the House of Representatives to impeach and on the Senate to convict.”
