More War Won’t Prevent More War in Syria

WASHINGTON — Win Without War Director Stephen Miles released the following statement regarding news that Donald Trump launched military strikes against Syrian government targets:

Creating more destruction, chaos, misery, and death in Syria will not solve the humanitarian crisis there, and it will not hold to account Bashar al-Assad or any other perpetrators of war crimes in Syria’s ongoing war. Donald Trump’s military strike last year in Syria clearly did not prevent the chemical weapons attack last weekend, and it will fail to prevent their use going forward.

What’s more, Congress has not authorized this strike. The president has promised sustained action. Therefore, the Constitution requires he must immediately come to the legislative branch to debate and vote on this military action against Assad and his chemical weapons stockpiles.

However, the only way to prevent further atrocities like the use of chemical weapons and to alleviate the human suffering in Syria is to work toward ending the war with a robust, creative, and sustained international diplomatic effort led by the United States.
