WASHINGTON — Win Without War Program Manager Mariam Iskajyan released the following statement in response to the House passage of H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act.
“Win Without War celebrates the House passage of the Dream and Promise Act, which would provide long-overdue permanent protections and a road map to citizenship for over two million people, including young immigrants known as Dreamers, and beneficiaries of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or Deferred Enforced Departure (DED). Ever since Donald Trump and his unaccountable advisor Stephen Miller systematically stripped away their protections, these communities have been living with immense fear and uncertainty.
“The Dream and Promise Act is essential to building equality, justice, and solidarity at home and abroad because human security is indivisible.
“At a time when anti-immigrant hatred, racism, and cruelty are plaguing the United States and communities across the world, H.R. 6 would instead uplift the humanity and rights of millions seeking to escape insecurity, and build a better life for themselves and their families.
“What’s more, the U.S. has a moral responsibility to safeguard and welcome, not hurt and demonize, immigrant communities — given that the drivers of migration have been in part fueled by American-enabled violence, endless wars, inequality, and climate change. Many of the beneficiaries of TPS or DED include survivors of the U.S.’s unjust and immoral foreign policy and immigration system, as well as other horrors, including in: El Salvador, Guinea, Haiti, Honduras, Liberia, Nepal, Nicaragua, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.
“We urge the United States Senate to follow suit and pass H.R. 6 immediately. We also urge all elected officials to champion and enact additional, robust reforms that seek to dismantle bigotry, address the drivers of forced migration, and uplift the rights, safety and dignity of all people who call this country home or aspire to make new life in the United States.”
